Funding Opportunities

The Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health (PNASH) Center, funded by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), offers small grants to respond to emerging issues, stimulate innovative research, and foster Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (AgFF) collaborations. The PNASH Center emphasizes safe and sustainable agricultural workplaces and communities, prioritizing the prevention of injury and illness—particularly for hired laborers, migrant and seasonal workers, and their families and children.

Pilot Project Program Updates

The PNASH Pilot Program awards up to $30,000 to recipients and prioritizes academic researchers, especially new investigators and trainees. Projects should address the prevention of AgFF injuries and illnesses to enhance safety and health in Pacific Northwest communities.

PNASH provides investigators with opportunities to:

• Develop preliminary data and/or expertise to support new proposals,
• Adapt or evaluate proven tools or techniques for new populations, workplaces, or delivery methods,
• Evaluate the merit of new ideas or new approaches to existing methodologies or datasets,
• Explore new directions in research, prevention/intervention and educatio/translation,
• Apply their expertise to the field of AgFF safety and health, and
• Leverage emerging technologies in supporting a healthy, safe, and productive AgFF workplace.

Successful applications should include clear plans to pursue future funding and to identify relevant agencies, organizations, or grant mechanisms that can leverage pilot project data to address the needs of agricultural workers in the Pacific Northwest.

Student Projects

Previous student projects, led by PNASH investigators, have covered topics such as pesticide exposure, injury epidemiology, and environmental justice. The PNASH Center has partnered with departments and institutions including Washington State University, Oregon State University, Idaho State University, Oregon Health Sciences University, Boise State University, NIOSH Alaska Pacific Office, UW Departments of Anthropology, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Evans School of Public Affairs.

The PNASH Center’s research is driven by strong partnerships with AgFF communities and regional stakeholders dedicated to occupational health and safety. We appreciate the contributions of all who have helped advance PNASH’s mission.

The PNASH Center welcomes collaboration with both emerging and established investigators committed to advancing safety and health research. Our team offers support as a resource, project partner, and facilitator in securing funding through NIOSH and other agencies, tailored to project requirements.
